The Running Kind presents another epic mountain challenge for any level of runner or hiker - The Basilisk!
The Basilisk is known among legends as the serpent king [ or queen ] and is truly a creature of immense power. This race is designed to test runners and hikers to find their power, step by step, while climbing up a double-black diamond slope at one of Pennsylvania’s most popular ski resorts, Camelback. You won’t find it surprising that this is one of two double black diamond ski slopes at the resort and the name of the one we’ve selected to run our course on is The Basilisk.
Runners and hikers can select from a multitude of distances and styles of racing, all of which will take place over a 2.5 mile loop covering just under 900ft of elevation gain and descent. You can take on the Baby Basilisk which will be a single loop or you can opt in for more! There will be options for a 5 mile [ 2 loops ] or a 10 mile [ 4 loops ]. The 10 mile will also have the option of being run in teams of two. The strategy is up to you. The only rule is that only one runner can be on the course at a time. Take on the 10 mile and cover nearly 3600ft of elevation change.

Doesn’t matter how you do it. Alternate laps or hit two and then let your partner run. As long as you each complete two laps for a total of four, your time will be stopped. When you are ready to switch off, be sure to send your timing chip with your partner. Whoever is running a lap, must have the chip.
-
Any distance will have the option of competing with weight added. You must check in at bib pickup with weight, however the amount of weight is up to you.
There are no official awards for this division, however everyone that completes their distance with weight will receive a special Basilisk patch.

All distances will be chip timed.

This is a zero carbon event, meaning we take into account the emissions released in relation to hosting this trail race. The Running Kind will be subsidizing the cost to offset the event, however there is a fee included in your registration specifically for this cost. This will offset the carbon emissions for your personal travel to and from the event. We are excited to partner with Change Climate to support a carbon offset project we believe in.
In addition to going zero carbon at this event, The Running Kind will be collecting monetary donations for Runners For Public Lands.

In an effort to improve diversity in trail racing and remove a potential barrier for the under-served and under-represented, Go Beyond Racing established the Trail Mix Fund™ in 2021. This Fund pays the race registration fee for runners who cannot afford it or aren’t sure they belong in the sport. The response to the Trail Mix Fund was so positive that this official not-for-profit organization was created and is now helping more trail racers get to the starting line.
Do you want to race but can’t afford the entry fee? Are you a part of the BIPOC or LGBTQ+ community?
Apply to the Trail Mix Fund to have your registration fee waived to any of our events.
